Dear Families,
Our school is participating in a fun summer reading project: the Scholastic Summer Reading Challenge, featuring Read for the World Record. The Summer Reading Challenge unites students from around the globe in an attempt to set a new world record for most minutes read this summer! Hill-Roberts Elementary School-Wide goal is “The Million-Minute Summer”!!
Studies show that kids who read over the summer maintain the reading skills developed during the school year. This summer-long reading campaign is designed to motivate all children to read more so they maintain and improve their academic skills.
The world record attempt begins May 9 and concludes September 9, 2016. The total logged reading minutes, along with the top 20 schools, will be published in the 2017 edition of the Scholastic Book of World Records.
When the children return in September, there will be a school wide celebration and recognition ceremony for individual top readers per grade… stay tuned for more details.
Here are a few simple ways to help your child become a record-breaking reader:
Make reading a big part of your family’s summer fun!
Sincerely,
The Hill-Roberts Elementary Summer Reading Team

Here are a few simple ways to help your child become a record-breaking reader:
- Set a goal together and encourage reading throughout the summer with library visits, story time at home, and conversations about books. Let your child see you reading. Attleboro Public Library has a wonderful children’s library and summer reading program, and is a great resource for additional books.
- Presently registered 2nd, 3rd and 4th graders will be able to access the schools Accelerated Reader books from http://www.attleboroschools.com/schools/hill-roberts/student_resources.php
- Encourage your child to participate and track reading minutes either with a paper log or online at www.scholastic.com/summer. It’s a kid-friendly, safe online community where students can be part of a record-setting global team, log reading minutes, and enjoy activities geared for all ages including weekly challenges and earning digital rewards. There are even online books unlocked each week to read!
- Find even more resources for parents at www.scholastic.com/parents.
Make reading a big part of your family’s summer fun!
Sincerely,
The Hill-Roberts Elementary Summer Reading Team
